Abstract

Objectives: He study was conducted to examine the effects of the combined use of waterpik and hexamidine mouthwash by orthodontic patients on the decrease of oral periodontal bacteria pathogens and dental plaque index.

Methods: In this study, oral health education was conducted for four weeks by dividing 30 orthodontic patients at Y dental clinic in Busan into a control group and an experimental group after which their PHP index was measured.

Results: PHP index values decreased the most when the number of weeks of waterpik use was longer and when there was a combined use of waterpiks and hexamidine after the administation of oral health education.

Conclusions: Oral health education hours must be extended so that dental hygienists can encourage patients to use the combination of Waterpik and hexamidine solution.
